As you can see the hillsides are bare. No trees are growing. This lead to a cathastrophic floods with every heavy rain. In 1904, at the Kazanlak public request, the Bulgarian Government asked the French Government for help to fight against torrents and floods. In 1905 the French forester Felix Luis-Mari Vogeli arrived and set up a Torrent Stabilization and Forestation Office in Kazanlak. He then worked in the country for six years and laid the beginning of anti-erosion activities on a national scale in Bulgaria. A lot of Bulgarians volunteered to build check dams and plant trees.
