Shipka Fest 2022. Days of Art and crafts will be held from September 2nd to 4th in the colourfull town of Shipka for 4th year in a row.  The event is being held at the Ethnographic museum Churpanlieva house, which is getting ready to welcome craftsmen, musicians, artists and lovers of bulgarian music, crafts and traditions.

The festival will start on Friday, Sept 2nd around lunch time with demonstration of the knife making and blacksmith craft . The evening music programme will present the Flying Nomads and Soulfia.

In the next 2 days Saturday 09/3 and Sunday 09/4, more than 15 craftsmen from around Bulgaria will open their workshops and show their mastery in the musem yard.

No matter if you are young or old  - you will be allowed to try the crafts in the many specially organized workships during the fest:

Kiril Mitrashkov, Stefan Chakov, Anton Atanasov and Boyan Karshakov will gather together from different parts of Bulgaria in Shipka and will show the magic of fire and traditional knife making process - a craft that used to be one of the main business in town.

Stanko Kirov from the village of Balgarovo has been part of Shipka Fest for a few years in a row with another beautiful craft, which is nearly forgotten nowdays - basket weaving. 

Desi Vladovska, a 2019 "Silver bell"  laureate from the International Etara Fair of Crafts will demonstrate pottery while Todor Milanov from Plovdiv will show jewelry from horn and nacre.

Children can also join the workshops of Denitza Zaprianova-Kostova (felting and Wool story) и Galina Gocheva (needle felting and henna drawing) and singing and sewing classes with Nevena Yovcheva from Pure heart School.  

It is a tradition now to learn soapmaking with Rada Stoynova (this time she will show the cold method) as well as to learn more secrets and specifics of herbal polstice making  from Nadejzda Maksimova. 

For the first year in a row Tania Ivanova, will demonstrate jewels, made of beads in the old Bulgarian tradition .

This year we are expecting more of a presence from the Shipka guild masters. Ivanka Genova, bulgarian embroidery, Dancho Danchev, woodwork and Rositsa Djagalova, eteric oils will be joined by Deian Denev, wheeling and Georgi Dimitrov who will be telling a story about the divine elexir of honey. Also from the region Rumen Milkov will show woodcarving, while Jenia Dimova, will demonstrate knitting.  Our dear friends from The Creative Center for Kalofer lace  will join us with a demonstration workshop.

Apart from the rich craftsmen participation, specially for the Shipka Fest guests the exhibition "Svetlina for Shipka" will be shown inside the museum. Svetlina for Shipka is a exhibition of painting, graphics and collage, dedicated to the cause of restoration of Chitalishte Home building. Guests can also visit the "Hristo Pesev" Art Gallery where they can see the permanent exhibition of Hristo Pesev's sculptures as well as the art work of Hristo Kutev, the documentary exhibition "160 years of Light", alonside the special photo exhibition that has drawn much attention so far in Sofia and Kazanlak "100 years ago with the photography of Antip Obushtarov", which is expected to travel to London after Shipka.

The one of its kind Shipka Museum of Affоrestation in Bulgaria will also open doors during the Festival.

Saturday night guests can enjoy authentic Bulgarian flolklore with Kemindjidji , followed by Bas Naroden, who will perform a fusion of contemporary electronic music with traiditional Balkan rhythmes and ethno bass. Between the 2 bands we shall be able to see the gentle beauty of the audio visiual exhibition Chinari (Plane trees)  -  http://chinari.space from Linda Barbara Vatzulka.

On Sunday do not miss the special projection of the documentary film Kaval Park (USA, Bulgaria, 140') directed by Bogdan Darev, on tour around Bulgaria at the moment.

The Festival is organized by Narodno Chitalishte „Svetlina – 1861“ and  "OPEN MIND” Foundation,  with the support of European Solicarity Corps volunteers doing a Ecology and Education for change. Community building project in Shipka/Kazanlak. The festival aims to bring life to Shipka, to share its beauty and secret treasures, as well as to support authentic Bulgarian crafts and folklore. The Festival is also a Zero Waste event, so don't forget to bring your tea pot, straw and utencils, to be able to fully join the zero waste challenge . No plastic utencils will be offered during the Fest.
