There is a small community of Sarakatsans living in Shipka.
Sarakatsani, also known as Karakachans are an ethnic minority in Bulgaria, originating from Greece. They were transhumant shepards, and their descendants in smaller amount inhabits present Bulgaria, southern Albania and Republic of Macedonia. Historically they were located in the Pindus mountains of the continental Greece, but in majority abandoned the transhumant way of living and have been urbanized.
According to the researches about the language and traditions they are considered as descendants of Vlachs, asimillating the Greek language. The name Karakachans originates in a Turkish word karakacan (kara – black and kacan – fugitive), as they used to wear blac clothes.
According to the other theory they originate from the village Sakaretsi, and from here comes the name.
